PENDLETON —The Pendleton Round-Up, now getting ready to start it’s 98th year, has recently been inducted into the Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, CO. The Round-Up was one of sixteen rodeos nationwide to be inducted into the prestigious institution with the class of 2008. The ceremony took place at the PRCA Hall of Fame on July 12th.
Round-Up President Butch Thurman expressed the pride of the Round-Up Association.
“Once again, we have to thank the volunteers that put the Round-Up on, along with the entire community of Pendleton, and the cities of our region,” Thurman said. “You know, we say this a lot but there’s a reason for it, and that is that this rodeo has survived for 98 years because of the volunteers, and we expect it to be around for at least 98 more.”
Thurman also noted the significance of the timing of the award.
“This is the first time that rodeo committees were honored, and to be one of the first is truly special. It really speaks to the significance of the Round-Up in the Northwest and in the United States. It’s truly a special, special honor.”
The other rodeos inducted were the Calgary Stampede; Salina, CA. Rodeo; Cheyenne Frontier Days; Dodge National Circuit Finals in Pocatello, ID; Grand National Rodeo in San Francisco; Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson; Denver Western Stock Show and Rodeo; Pikes Peak Rodeo in Colorado Springs; Reno, NV. Rodeo; San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo; Southwestern Exposition rodeo in Fort Worth; Texas West of the Pecos Rodeo; The Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte, NE and the Prescott, AZ., rodeo.
There are over 700 PRCA sanctioned rodeos held each year.
Ten other members of the class of 2008 were inducted, all rodeo legends.
The Hall's inductees are selected annually by a committee of former contestants, rodeo notables, PRCA officials and rodeo experts.
