Pendleton Round-Up Newsletter - January 2008

As we begin a new year, many traditional events are being planned. The Volunteer Helper’s Party is scheduled for February 2nd; the Happy Canyon Helper’s Party is February 8th; and the BBQ Helper’s Party is February 23rd. There will be plenty of raffles and we look forward to seeing all of our invited volunteers there.

The First Citizen’s Banquet is January 25th and Round-Up always sponsors a table at that event. This year the banquet will be held at Wildhorse Resort, which should make for a fun evening.

Board members are busy putting their 2008 budgets in place and planning for any capital improvements that need to be made. All budgets have to be approved by a budget committee that meets with each Director individually to review and go over each budget line item. Capital improvements are also prioritized based on need, cost and how they fit into the overall future goals of Round-Up.

One of the biggest hurdles Round-Up faces and has faced for a number of years is parking. The old days of a cowboy showing up in a single bench seat pickup and a two-horse trailer is a thing of the past. Larger trailers and pickups certainly have added to our parking problem, but don’t forget that in the past fifteen years, we’ve added two events that have only compounded the problem. Team Roping was added in 1991 and barrel racing came onto the Round-Up scene in 2000. Members of the board are working hard to figure this problem out and to accommodate both volunteers and the cowboys and cowgirls. There is no quick fix for this dilemma because property around the Round-Up grounds is so limited.

Don’t forget to bring your out of town guests to the Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame and our gift store. It’s the perfect place to spend a few hours showing people the history of Pendleton and why we are known as the “Round-Up City”. It’s also a great place to purchase a reminder of your visit to Pendleton.
