Pendleton Round-Up Newsletter - December 2007

Much has happened since last month’s newsletter, including the addition of three new directors and a busy trip to Las Vegas.

We are pleased to welcome Tygh Campbell, John Trumbo and Troy LeGore to the Round-Up Board. Each of these fellows bring a lot of experience to the table, both inside the arena and out and we look forward to them (and their wives) becoming involved in this great event. Congratulations to all.

Most everyone involved with rodeo knows that the WNFR is currently taking place in Las Vegas. What some may not know is that for three days prior to the rodeo starting, the PRCA Convention takes place at the South Point Casino. There are so many activities taking place that it’s sometimes difficult to take everything in and I don’t want to bore you with all the round-table sessions that are available, but a person can learn an awful lot by attending, and meet some great people associated with the sport of rodeo along the way. Some of the highlights of this year’s trip were assisting with our Big 4 party, which includes Ellensburg, Walla Walla, Lewiston and Pendleton. The party is held at the South Point “Arena Saloon”, which overlooks an indoor arena that seats 2500 people, all with individual seats. It’s quite a facility, but the best part might be in the basement, where there are 1500 individual, climate controlled, padded stalls and valet parking for livestock trucks.

Another highlight was attending the PRCA Awards Banquet, also at the South Point. Pendleton was up once again for Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year, but also once again, Cheyenne won it. Cheyenne does a great job with their rodeo and although it’s tough to lose, I can’t think of anyone I’d rather lose to.

This year marked the second annual Legends of Pro Rodeo breakfast, which has become a big fund raiser for the PRCA Hall of Fame. This year’s honorees were Tom Reeves, former PRCA bronc riding champion and current rodeo coach at Ranger College and the late Jim Shoulders. Ty Murray was on hand to speak on behalf of both honorees, as was Clem McSpaden and Jim Shoulder’s wife. It was a very nice event.

While in Las Vegas, several of us had a nice talk with Bob Romeo, the booking agent for our concert act. Bob has done a great job for us over the past 18 years and has been responsible for bringing in some big time names, but the country music industry is changing and most of the headliners are now completely out of our price range. It’s not unusual for a big time act to run in the $500 to $750 thousand dollar range. You’d need either a big pocket book, or the potential to draw a lot of people to a large stadium to cover those costs. Bob is working on finding us an affordable act for this year and we hope to be able to announce something in the near future.

Don’t forget the Round-Up and Happy Canyon gift shop. There are lots of goodies for that special person on your shopping list. We have survivor t-shirts marked down from $18 to $12, Bucking Horse scrapbooks and lined journals on sale as well for $9 each. We also have new styles of long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts for men, women, youth and toddlers. The new calendars are in too, so stop by and say hi.

We at Round-Up want to wish each of you a happy holiday and a prosperous new year. Stay safe and until next month...Let’er Buck!

Did you know? There are over 750 Round-up volunteers.

Did you know?In 1914 Bertha Blancett, wife of cowboy Del Blancett, came within 12 points of winning the All-Around title at the Pendleton Round-Up.
